Reaper Bolt Throwers - The impossible challenge?

Reaper Bolt Throwers are used at sea to clear the decks of enemy vessels, and on land to scythe down ranks of enemy warriors. A mechanism of counterweights and cords allow the Reaper to shoot a hail of bolts, or a single missile with force enough to pierce a Dragon's hide. The bolts are barbed and difficult to remove from the wounds they inflict. Those injured - but not slain - by such a shot often suffer such horrendous maiming on the bolt's removal that they are worthless as slaves, and are therefore left to bleed to death or given over to the bloody caresses of the Witch Elves.

Of all possible Warhammer-based MOCs this is the one that should be avoided. Being an elegant, lean, defined miniature, in LEGO it becomes a problem of details, colors, and proportions.

Yet, the Winds of Inspiration around Eternals set 76145-1 were calling strong, especially around the mother of pearl hues of the new blades LEGO has released in this set, and here comes a first attempt.

To note:

  • Proportions are somehow affected by the fact that the lower arm of the ballista in the original model is actually shorter, although this remains pretty hard to notice. This allow it to be perfectly parallel to the ground and defines the actual proportions of the model (head of the elf just ahead of the ballista body laid down horizontally). For this exact reason also the position cannot be the same as in the model.
  • Colors are pretty important and, while we do not lack gold bits, it gets direr when talking about dark purple. The two blades of the ballista should in particular be brick 18395 and not brick 69858, which is the exact shape we need here, but only available in the most awful of colors.
  • The legs of the model are basically perfect and everything gravitates around this brick - Weapon Holder Ring.
  • The tail suffers from "excessive squaring" and would require some tinier and ornamented ending.
  • Trident is a little luxury I allowed myself :)

For once, I kicked myself into some Stud.Io rendering and here comes a first attempt at what I have in mind. Dunno why, but it has some Saint Seyia flavor.

And for the lovers of vintage, the previous version of this model.
