The Empire strikes again - Great cannon

Great Cannons are among the largest of the mobile cannons built and employed by the armies of the Empire, and are used extensively as the main artillery. The Great Cannons of the Empire were first invented by the ingenious designers of the College of Engineers. This cannon is one of the most successful weapons ever invented by the Empire, able to sow terror and destruction upon any battlefield.

Deep from the forges of Nuln, this imperial cannon has been donated to the troops of Sylvania to protect the Eastern flank of the Empire from all monstrosities this land still hosts among the shadows. So it has been painted red and black, in one of the rare display of the wicked land insigniae colors.

As it's often the case, this model consists of several releases along the years, as much as many concept art variations and videogame versions. Yet, it remains ones of the most consistent of all, hence also not the most difficult, in theory, to reproduce.

In LEGO terms, the lack of almost any decoration and stud points on the cannons, make it actually very difficult to customise any MOC with one. In this project the first challenge was represented by the long tail of the cannon, which needed to be squared and solid. While the entire build started with the side-bars, including the round shape with the 4 alternated colour quarters to try and shape the descending tail, came out quite easily, the ending of it (like most of my MOCs, tbh!) was more difficult. Not sure it is visible, but I basically played on some visual illusions and the plank in the back side consists of two separate bits simply sitting by each other, as the actual width is 2.5 stud (might need a go with Part Designer here!).
For building need, I had to opt for a black/red pattern, instead of my more classic white/red.

Then I wanted to add something on top, some decoration some frieze and this golden dragon trick is all that came to mind. I wonder if this does not better apply to some dwarf cannon.

Last but not least, the complete version of the project adds a dented and bulleted shield on the top, with hanging chain ring and lock to finish the details. The ring and the lock are simply some showcase/show off of some late ideas I cannot better place somewhere else :).
The result is a bit bulky, no doubt, and the proportions of a long cannon quite compromised. Yet all these elements belong well here, that shield was just waiting for me, and the result is a solid, battle worn cannon!

With reference to the whole of my MOCs, this represents another piece of artillery from the Empire, basically covering each of the ones existing in the game (with the Hellblaster Volley Gun and Helstorm Rocket Battery). Will try to have an update soon with all of them in one pic!.
